Livin’ Large

Park City 2008

I was vacationing recently in Park City (best snow since 1992-93!) when my work at the University invaded.  We were in the process of hiring for an important position on campus, and the only time everyone could assemble on a conference call to interview two prospective candidates was smack dab in the middle of the day.  The grim prospect of a lost ski day loomed . . .

Not wanting to lose the day entirely, I decided to try using  my iPhone with Ultimate Ears buds (the ones that seal tightly, totally eliminating external sound) in the Snow Hut at the base of the Silverload lift.  The lodge was noisy, the cell coverage was questionable, and the calls were to last two hours in total.  Would the sound isolation, cell phone reception and battery life be adequate?

They were.  Amazing.  Clear reception, good audio quality (even while in the midst of a party) and leftover power in the iPhone to boot!  The best part?  Another group of three skiers were just leaving as I finished the first call and removed the buds to rest my ears and stretch.

“Were you conducting some kind of interview?” one of them asked.

“I was”, I said and then explained the setup.

He grinned; “you mean you skied this morning, are doing a little work in the lodge, and are still skiing this afternoon?”

I nodded.

“Man!  That’s livin’ large!”

(BTW, the gallery shows pics from the trip)
